EMA KANDRAVA

Hi! My name is Ema and I’m a young ambitious designer who aims to use her skills to help design a better future. Throughout my time as a Design student at Lancaster University, I was able to gain new skills and explore different branches of design.

Many of my projects concern themselves with social and environmental issues, and aim to find possible and fresh solutions to these problems. Some of the topics I addressed in my work include climate change, well-being of people, cultural preservation or future technologies. By visualising my ideas and work with fun and bold colours, I aim to bring a fresh aesthetic and perspective to the future of design.

In the future, I hope to develop my skills further with focus on UX, graphic and sustainable fashion design.

Płuco is a structure which has been designed to tackle the problem of high levels of air pollution in the city of Kraków in Poland, which has been named as one of the most air polluted cities in the EU. The structure spreads over the two busiest traffic bridges in the city, collecting pollution form the surrounding traffic and turning it to clean air. In a world where we see a continuous rise in air pollution, there is a need to take action to start preventing this harmful phenomenon from happening. Air pollution does not only pose a great threat to the environment as one of the biggest causes for global warming, but also hugely affects daily lives of humans and their well-being.

Working on the basis of ‘breathing walls’, Płuco’s structure is made up of filtration tiles coated with TiO2, which neutralizes pollutants and turns them into clean air. Therefore, it’s aim is to serve as an artificial lung for the people of the city. The structure includes a clean air fast walk-through and a park at the top of the structure.

Times Magazine Article about Protests against 'Hologram Immortality'

In this project, I used design fiction to create and imagine a fictional world where in the future, holographic entertainment becomes widely popular. Design Fiction is a discipline which allows designers to look further into the future. It uses design to formulate questions which encourage people to think critically about issues, future technologies and how they might affect the environment, people and more. This way, it helps showcase how things might be in the future, what problems or opportunities might arise.

Holographic technology has slowly started to be implemented into different fields and is expected to have big impact in the near future. Due to the development of 3D holograms and the development in sensing technologies, the future of holographic technology is quite broad and could possibly become a part of our everyday lives soon. The emergence in holographic technology would allow for new types of entertainment in the future. What if in the future, hologram performances and artists became as common as the non-holographic ones? I imagined this hologram future to happen within the next 10-20 years.

I focused my artefacts on a set of main challenges I felt would arise with this new type of entertainment. These would include issues with holographic resurrection, Uncanny Valley effect causing feelings of anxiety and discomfort, confusing reality, new ‘immortal’ beauty standards, misuse of holograms and more. Some of my artefacts included a company leaflet, a legal contract, concert tickets, notice boards and magazine or online articles.

c-FISH Advertisement Poster

In this project, I used speculative design methods to imagine a world in which cultivated or lab-grown fish meat would be dominant in the fish market. Through this I was able to address issues with overfishing and marine ecosystem damage, while trying to find possible solutions to this problem.

Billions of people rely on fish as their primary source of protein, with fishing being the principal livelihood of millions of people all over the world. However, fishing has also become one of the most significant causes of decline in ocean’s wildlife populations. Issues such as overfishing come with damage of habitat or bycatch, causing imbalance in the marine ecosystem, therefore having great impact on the life below water and climate change.

I named lab-grown fish meat c-FISH, which would help them be differentiated from the real fish. My first artefact looks at how these fish might be packaged in the future to appeal to the general public, showcasing the packaging label, the new additions that would probably be needed such as a sticker sign that shows it’s cultivated fish or the option of adding nutrients.

The second artefact is an online BBC News article, where I addressed issues I think would arise with the popularity cultivated fish. These would be fishermen losing jobs and the fishing industry changing completely. Through this article I tried to address not just the problem and possible views of fishermen, but also how the c-FISH companies might try to solve this problem.

Corset Tops with Traditional Slovak Ornaments

In the past few decades, we have met many technological advancements, including the rise of social media, allowing people worldwide to become as connected and globalised as ever. However, this phenomenon has had an immense impact on cultures, heritage and preservation. Globalisation poses a threat to individual cultures as this amalgamation causes them to be less unique and is pushing them back, slowly erasing them. With this project, I aimed to showcase a way that contemporary design can help preserve cultures and prevent them from slowly disappearing. Through research, I was able to understand the present young consumers, their interests, relationship with their own cultures and why they are not as involved with it as the previous consumers. Like this, I could see that fashion design could serve as a great way to help preserve culture and gain interest of the young consumers.

For the project, I also studied elements of my own culture, the Slovak folk culture. Through this research, I was then able to design my own traditional ornaments. By applying these to modern trending fashion, I was able to modernise the traditional culture through design. I chose to work with the current corset trends and followed the Pantone supporting colours of the year 2022 to design a piece of clothing which would appeal to the young consumers while preserving traditional elements of the Slovak culture.

travelB Application Diagram

Have you ever traveled to a different country, city or even wanted to explore your home-town, but did not know which places to visit to have the best possible experience to your liking? travelB is an app that allows its user to find places they want to visit according to their interests and hobbies. It aims to find the most interesting places and things to do in specific locations in order to create the best trip plan for their user.

The concept design of travelB uses minimalistic, fresh and modern aesthetics combined with hand-drawn illustrative style. The app’s icon takes inspiration from different location and GPS apps, using location arrow in order to make the purpose of the app more obvious. To represent hobbies and interests, I chose to use a heart in the middle of the arrow.

Repurposing Masaryk Square in Ostrava, CZ

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the world seemingly stopped. People had to stay home and things that we once used to take for granted such as shopping, hanging out with friends and family, events, going to school or even using public transport became more of an occasion. Concerts, parties, festivals and any type of social events were cancelled as well. The aim of this project was to imagine and visualise the post-pandemic world through repurposing retail space. This visualisation project consisted of three main elements:  repurposing retail space, distributing goods and encouraging return. The city I have chosen to base my visualisations in was Ostrava, Czech Republic.
