Gaia Rafea's work addresses the most pressing issue the world faces today, Climate Change. Her paintings address the issue by focusing on weather patterns that are a result of nature out of balance. Watercolour and inks are used to articulate a sense of ‘atmosphere’ combined with suggestions of landscape. 

  The main emphasis here is on a mark-making process, built up over time – a cyclical process that mirrors the ever changing weather and wonders of the world.  The process is very much one of trial and error – where the image is revealed as a result of action, doubt, and erasure. Through painting and repainting, there is a force of frustration in the work, that aims to reflect on the issue of global warming. Most marks, although derived from the motion of the landscape and weather are unconsiously positioned. In our current situation of climate change, people tend to not be aware of the harm they cause daily to the planet.  

These fluid, natural markings tell the story of a bigger picture and a much bigger problem. The emphasis of nature is excecuted a completely different way, where one questions whether it is a landscape or not. The artworks aims to pull the viewer in, to ponder and think about their own marks that they are making on our world.
