Art and the Future?
Communicating with the machines
Gemma Wicks
Have you ever considered how a machine could learn to read emotions? During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic (when the world was heavily disconnected) Jeanette Winterson detailed how artificial intelligence has manifested itself to mimic our behaviours. It has become our new connections by learning about our nature within literature, myths and even religious beliefs such as Buddhism.
Interviewing students from a variety of subject areas, this film looks at the unconventional ways that they are informed about the idea of the future and machine learning. Gemma acknowledges that to most people this might appear like a rose tinted and naïve ideology on the surface. However, using Winterson’s methodology and idea of how art can inform technology about emotions brings a meeting point where humans don’t understand machines and machines don’t understand humans.
Feeding fragments of interview conversations and their corresponding imagery into machine learning software, Gemma physicalises this meeting point. By suggesting this she hopes to indicate how useful art can be in the process of redesigning a clearer interaction with ever-growing technological futures.
