India is a painter who creates artwork that represent her background of being part of the working-class. Her practice focuses on the small joys found in being working-class through looking at their homes and the things they display. Adding a new life and meaning to the otherwise known ‘bric-a-brac’ found in working-class people’s homes.
Using gouache paint on wooden panel boards, India creates intricate and interesting paintings that encourage the viewer to reflect on their homes and the things they display, giving them a new life and meaning. India’s project was influenced by the Dutch still life paintings of the 17th century and how in these still-life paintings, the artists chose to paint their riches and gems as that was what was important to them, flaunting their wealth. India flipped this concept on its head by painting little figures found in charity shops as she believes these are just as important to people as the riches found in Dutch still life painting and have their own story to be shared.
