THE FEMALE NARRATIVE OF THE STREETS

'THE LIMINAL SPACE BETWEEN THE CONSCIOUS AND SUBCONSCIOUS'

Mariam’s work deals with the female narrative of the Egyptian streets through her dynamic video installation. The work is a social commentary conveying a shared experience that is not exclusive to Egyptian females but rather transcends cultural boundaries.It does this by targeting human empathy through the overwhelming nature of the installation experience.

In her process she draws from her own experiences with harassment and anxiety as well as those she witnessed happening to women around her. The work focuses on the dynamics between what is seen in the internal and external lens of a woman’s mind while walking the streets. This juxtaposition is emphasized in the integration of the street footage taken in Egypt as well as her dance footage that deconstructs the way in which a body should move.

Her practice is unique in terms of its improvisational elements. She creates the movement not as a choreographed piece but rather as a reaction to the environment around her, allowing her subconscious to guide her motions.
