Maya is an oil painter who works with intuition-based surrealism which surrounds the post-human figure. Inspired by Leonora Carrington and resonating with the surrealist movement, Maya merges classical oil painting techniques and aesthetics of the surrealist movement. Their work visualises subconscious thought, inspired by the imagery of dreams and the unknown. This is translated through their series of works where they take inspiration from fantastical forms created through abstractions of the real world. Their own inner psyche – their thoughts and dreams - are their muse. Their work takes the form of large oil paintings, depicting strange and unfamiliar settings with dynamic compositions filled with post-human figures. Human/animals figures are reimagined through a distorted lens which both combines forms and creates new ones. In visualising forms, Maya takes inspiration from various regional folkloric imagery and historical illustrations. The use of expressive marks and dynamic shapes are vital to creating an atmosphere which is both quiet and energetic.
Above all else, their paintings reflect an inner-self, where the overarching feeling of self-entertainment, sporadic thinking and embracing absurdity allow for out of the box thinking to take refuge. Their works achieves the balance between childhood imagination and the uncertainty of the future. Their painting practice offers the viewer to observe the irrational, listen to the subconscious, and consider their own hidden world.
