Olivia Taylor

Olivia Taylor is a textile artist whose work uses elements of hand stitching and embroidery. The use of textiles has been a primary medium throughout Olivia’s practice. Her interest in sewing originates from being taught at a young age by her mother. The notion of intergenerational skills and the importance of family connection has been embedded throughout Olivia’s work. Sewing and embroidery symbolises family and a sense of heritage, and the sewing skills such as those Olivia has developed reflect the generations of women who taught their daughters.

In her installation “Acceptance of what’s to come” Olivia features numerous hand-crafted birds that lay scattered across the floor. This represents an emotional and personal experience from her life. The day she visited her granddad for the last time before his passing she witnessed a bird flying into the hospice window. After going to check the bird she found it on the ground having died from the impact. Seeing the bird lying dead on the ground was upsetting, however it provided her with a strange sense of comfort. When reflecting on the death of that small helpless creature she looked beyond the seemingly unjust situation and realised within life comes death. Olivia’s work demonstrates how the concept of death is one that can be scary and confusing but ultimately something we should embrace to honour and remember those we love.
