OLIVIA URBABOWICZ
Studying Design as part of my joint degree with Marketing, allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of how design thinking can help tackle current and future challenges. My degree inspired my greater interest in sustainability and how design can benefit the environment and society.
Below is a summary of some of my key projects where I looked into repurposing a space in Lancaster, visualising an app, and creating artefacts from a speculative future.
Post- Covid highstreet visualisations
Below are more examples from the post-covid high street project. Imagining an intervention on New Street and Sun Square in Lancaster that creates a more social space that encourages return. The use of shipping containers turned into street food stalls will create a vibrant and lively environment for the public to enjoy during their shopping trips



Visualising an app
As part of this project, I designed an app that would ease searching for second-hand clothing shops to encourage sustainable fashion. The idea to "revive" clothing inspired the name "Vived". It also features a point collecting system with the intention of creating sustainable habits, therefore the more you shop sustainably instead of buying from fast fashion stores, the more points and offers you receive from the shops on the app.



Speculative design - Food systems
For this project, I responded with artefacts from a speculative future where meat consumption is restricted in hopes to cut down carbon emissions from food systems. A ration card in the form of an app and physical card is distributed by the government. In order to buy meat, people are required to show their ration card at a covered meat counter, intended to limit access.



3D Zoetrope Automaton
This module differed from the rest as it allowed me to practice several practical skills such as laser cutting, 3D printing and coding. The task was to create an automaton - a mechanism designed to automatically follow a set of instructions. Together with Isabella Ashdown, we assembled this 3D zoetrope as a response to the brief. Although the motion was not seamless, we overcame many challenges and it was a rewarding experience to construct something entirely ourselves and watch it work.
