Priyanka’s paintings explore the idea of body dysmorphia which continually affects the world’s population. Through the increased use of social media, societal expectations about body image have damaged the way people perceive themselves, and of others. Her work consists of acrylic paintings and clay sculptures, the latter being the subject matter of the paintings. The figures are moulded to be ambiguous and biomorphic, with asymmetrical breasts, as well as posing unrealistically. This is to emphasise the irrational concept of what our bodies ‘should’ look like, and how media has distorted reality through photoshop and discreet angles. She paints large, dramatic shadows to reinforce the idea that we warp the way we perceive ourselves and, by doing so, exaggerate our insecurities and imperfections, causing us to hate our bodies. Through muted colours, the sculptures look lonely, as we normally deal with the insecurities of our bodies behind closed doors.
With these ideas combined: the poses of the figures, the shadows and the muted colours, Priyanka has created a series of paintings which epitomises the altered perception that is body dysmorphia.
