'Glutton for Punishment' series, 2022
Rose Britch’s practice explores the unspoken relationship society subconsciously has with the food we consume. Working from her own photographs and then through a process she creates ink and oil forms to physically represent the mentality of trauma with food. The lack of recognizability of the people within these images is what is reflected in the consumption of food and the distortion of the human face and body in recognition of something that should only be seen as another human process. Starting from the artist’s own relationship with food, the work has become an amalgamation of how those around her also interact with food and the ways in which this differed to her own experience. The context of themes in a contemporary society is that of how both men and women are constantly presented within the media and how this denotes itself to self-worth and individuals’ relationship with themselves and the food they eat. She explores how far she can push the physical appearance of the person with food and how the paintings’ physical appearance changes to become unrecognizable to the viewer with the use of textural painting and gestural forms.
