Vasiliki’s painting practice explores optical illusions and the effect of moiré patterns. A moiré pattern is an optical effect created when at least two overlaying offset layers of patterns interfere.
Her work is process-based and relies on colour and shape. It consists of layers of oil paint, which she swipes with a comb-like tool to create different patterns of lines. As the layers build up, the different patterns interfere and create the moiré effect. This effect becomes more intense when the viewer looks at the paintings from an angle. The patterns seem to move and the colours blend. Vasiliki thinks of her work as the kinetic energy of colour.
During the painting process of swiping the paint with the tool, imperfections or ‘glitches’ happen. Since moiré patterns are usually associated with digital screens, these ‘glitches’ oppose Vasiliki’s work to the perfectionism of digital optical illusions and mechanically made optical effects. Even though the ‘glitches’ are intentional, they occur naturally and randomly. They constitute an unavoidable element of her practice, because of her non-mechanical painting technique. They imply her painting process consisting of layers and the involvement of human error.
Her paintings explore colour theory and how colours interact with each other when juxtaposed. She challenges visual perception and understanding of colour and form.
