Will Doe
What does creating art mean to me? I had not enjoyed producing art for a while coming into my final year, and I figured that to fall back in love with it I had to figure out this exact question.
I wanted to take pride in my work once more: If you don’t take pride in what you create, then you have created nothing. I found the idea of making art that had no clear path in its process to be an exciting one; an instinctual way of creating. Having also recognised colour and paint as one of my main strengths in my practice, I took inspiration from neo-impressionists and avant-garde painters to make… well, anything that came to mind, using any tools, techniques or surfaces I had. I would describe the process of creating this work to be a continuous loop of experimentation. Eventually, an element would be added to a piece that just makes it tick, and that moment is one of great fulfilment.
Later in the year, my work began to focus, almost by chance, upon sci-fi costume and fashion, something I saw in my earlier work that often travelled towards human form. I started using metallic objects within my art, and found using mirrors as a painting surface to be an interesting way to integrate the viewer themselves within my work. This also means these pieces change dependant on the light that hits it, in a way finding an infinite amount of ways it can present itself.
